Kelly’s Spur, Make Amends win Saturday Dover features

DOVER, DE — Kelly’s Spur won his second straight in the $17,300 Delaware Male while Make Amends behaved this time to take the $15,000 Delaware Mares pace on a 30-mile per hour windy Saturday, March 8 at Dover Downs.

Tony Morgan drove five winners, Roger Plante won four, and trainer-driver Jim King scored a driving double. Owners JoAnn King and Joyce Keeler each had two winners while trainer Vic Keeler notched a pair of wins.

In the $17,300 feature, Jeff Bartels’ Kelly’s Spur took the lead after the quarter for Jonathan Roberts and cut out the pace in a 1:54.2 triumph in a Delaware Male pace. Glasscutters Atom (Brandon Givens) was second best. Solid Hanover (Roger Plante) was third.

After breaking stride and finishing out of the money as odds-on favorite least start, the Cole Muffler four-year-old Make Amends did just that for driver Tony Morgan and owner Joyce Keeler, romping to a 1:57.4 victory in a $15,000 Delaware 4&5-Year-Old Mares pace. Lucy Lou Lynn (Don Davis) shaded Florist (Ben Stafford Jr.) for place.

Kattimon began Tony Morgan’s four-bagger. Owned by Mike and Lisa Hill and Green Racing Inc., the Astreos mare made her local debut with a 1:57.3 conquest in a $15,000 Delaware 4&5-Year-Old Mares pace. Art Sizzles (Eddie Davis Jr.) was runner-up. KJ’s Allnightdancer (Jonathan Roberts) was the third place finisher.

Mike Cole recorded his second win guiding Night’s Nautical to victory in a $10,200 Delaware Male pace for Ask W Stables and George and Tina Dennis Inc. in 1:56. Driven By You (Jason Lynch) edged Nascart Sam (Tony Morgan) for second money.

Roger Plante drove DI Blast to his third straight victory in an $11,500 conditioned trot. Napoleon Andrup (Kim Vincent) was second. Wen-Mar’s Handsome (Eddie Davis Jr.) third.

Kevin Sizer took Powerful Committee right to the front, and the CR Commando gelding owned by Tina and Joann Clark and Cantwell Bridge Stable led the rest of the way in 2:00.3 to win the first of two $10,200 Delaware trots. Stormont Northstar (Eddie Davis Jr.) stalked the winner the entire mile and finished second. Wishwell Sugarbaby (Kim Vincent) was third.

The King family had a big night with Jim King driving two longshot winners owned by his wife JoAnn. In the second $10,200 trot, King drove 35-1 shot Nikki’s Game closed fast to beat Bullville Sue (Tim Curtin) to the finish line in 2:00 to win the second $10,200 trot. Star Lite Stinger (Vic Kirby) finished third.

Later in a $10,200 Delaware Male pace, King guided a homebred, Wyatt And Me, off at 9-1, to a convincing 1:56.1 victory. Canaco Le Noblet (Ross Wolfenden) was well back in second. Deep Pockets N (Mike Cole) took show honors.

Hezaumpn Bluegrass, owned, trained and driven by Brewer Adams won a tight blanket-finish photo in 1:56.1 to win a $20,000 Claiming Allowance. Mr. Fit (Jonathan Roberts) was second with On His Way (Corey Callahan) right there third.

Evelyn’s Fantasy beats the favorite in Rosecroft feature; Russell wins six of 13 on Saturday

FT. WASHINGTON, MD – Showing some early gate speed to secure a spot in the pocket, Evelyn’s Fantasy [$9.00, $3.40, $3.80] won the featured pace at Rosecroft Raceway on Saturday evening in 1:56.0.

Driven by trainer Donnie Russell, the six-year-old Island Fantasy gelding tracked leaders Gold Comet and SA Monterosa through early quarters of 27.2 and 56.2. Russell tipped the gelding out second-over at the three-quarter pole in 1:24.4 to close with a last quarter of 31.0, winning by just over a length. Russell co-owns Evelyn’s Fantasy with Edward Needle.

Gold Comet [$8.00, $4.00] faded back to second after holding the lead in the stretch with Ken Weckstein at his lines. The four-year-old gelded son of Aces N’ Sevens paced first-over through a challenging mile to finish just behind the winner. Ken Schlotzhauer trains the gelding for owners Weckstein and Richard Rubin.

Typhoon Luther [$5.00] closed out the $232.80 trifecta for lessee-trainer Leon Harris. The eight-year-old Keystone Luther gelding, driven by Kelly Staten, was overlooked at the betting windows at 16/1 odds by post time. Typhoon Luther worked out a good trip along the rail to hit the board.

Driver Donnie Russell took nearly half of the card on Saturday in his battle for the top spot in the standings. The first race brought PH Outlaw to the top of the field in 1:57.1. Trained by Shawn Armour for owner William Emmons, the eight-year-old Happy Family gelding won by over two lengths.

Dreamlands Pony paced second-over in the fifth race to win by a head in 1:58.1. Owned and trained by Ken Schlotzhauer, the four-year-old Artiscape horse was sharp to beat the betting choice at the wire.

In the seventh race, Hi Sea sat in the pocket to score by a head in 1:59.3 for trainer Colby Hubble. Owned by Joseph Eisenhower Jr., the six-year-old Magical Mike gelding scored a perfect trip at 9/1 odds.

Despite being interfered with at the three-quarter pole, Punkin Eater drew away in the stretch in the ninth race by over three lengths. Trained by Shawn Armour for the J A C’s Success Stable, the seven-year-old Anthony P gelding stopped the timer in 1:57.1.

The tenth race brought Evelyn’s Fantasy to the winner’s circle, while Russell closed out his winning night in the 12th race with pacer Gaje. The five-year-old Misfit gelding grabbed the lead at the half to win by more than six lengths in 1:58.2. James Fortna trains for owners Allen Stoltzfus and Megan Fortna.

SA Monterosa eyes repeat in Winner’s Over pace

Post time for tonight’s big 13-race card is 6:30 p.m. and the $4,200 Winner’s Over pace is the featured event.

SA Monterosa paced wire-to-wire last time in this class, winning in 1:54.4 with Corey Braden in the sulky. The seven-year-old gelded son of The Panderosa, trained by Thomas Swann for owner Lois Swann, will start from post position three as the 5/2 morning line favorite. This week, Billy Mann will be at the lines for the drive.

Yokozuna Bo has been sharp as well, and could be considered at 3/1 early odds. Frank Milby will be aboard for the drive, as the four-year-old Allie’s Western gelding is set to start from post position five. Last week, the trainee of Betsy Brown finished second to SA Monterosa in a close mile. Ralph Hayward owns the pacer.

The tenth race field also includes Gold Comet (Ken Weckstein, 4/1), Stirseventimes (Wayne Long, 6/1), Typhoon Luther (Kelly Staten, 5/1) and Evelyn’s Fantasy (Donnie Russell, 7/1).

“Pretty Lady” overtakes Rosecroft Open field; Milby bags five wins on Friday

FT. WASHINGTON, MD – As the overwhelming betting favorite, Art’s Pretty Lady [$3.60, $4.00, $2.40] quarter-poled for the lead and never looked back, winning the $6,000 Open pace for fillies and mares at Rosecroft Raceway on Friday by over three lengths in 1:57.2.

Driven by Frank Milby, the five-year-old Arturo mare sat in third through an opening quarter of 29.1 before claiming the lead to take the field through remaining fractions of 58.4 and 1:29.1. Trained by Connie Kamit for owners Susan Chytla and Nicholas Kamit, the mare fired home with a 28.1 last quarter to earn her fourth consecutive victory this year and continuing her undefeated 2008 season.

Wayne Long drove High Speed Racer [$4.00, $5.40] to a strong second-place finish, as the four-year-old Nuclear High mare sat in the pocket through much of the mile. The trainee of Roger Hans crossed under the wire three-and-a-half lengths behind the winner in 1:58.0. Tom Cooke owns the ever-improving pacer.

Wishwell Buttercup [$3.80], overlooked at 18/1 odds by post time, finished third under the guidance of driver Timmy Offutt. The six-year-old daughter of Real Artist, trained by Joe Offutt for owners Timmy and Maria Lewis, paced first-over after the half to close out the $86.40 triple.

One of Rosecroft’s leading drivers, Frank Milby, scored five wins on the 11-race card this Friday to outshine the competition, including the Open pace with Art’s Pretty Lady.

Milby took the opening double; the first race brought the seven-year-old Captain Per mare Missyoulin to the winner’s circle in 1:58.2. Despite being parked out through the middle half of the race, the trainee of George Bartlett held strong to win by a length and a quarter. Bartlett co-owns the mare with Alvin Mindel.

Hot Fusion was a winner in the second race; the five-year-old Art’s Conquest mare paced her way to a two and a quarter length victory in 1:55.2. James Fortna trains the mare for owner Megan Fortna.

Milby reined Wynfield Girl to the front in the fourth race as the 2/1 betting favorite. Owned and trained by Jerry Nock, the seven-year-old Wynfield Mark mare paced second-over to win by over three lengths in 1:59.3.

In the seventh race, Izzie Hero, a three-year-old Western Hero filly, paced wire-to-wire in 1:59.1. Trained by Gerald Kelly for owner Roger Hammer, the filly scored by over two lengths at even-money odds.

Dees Last Man, Smokin Not Chokin headline Dover Thursday

DOVER, DE — Dees Last Man took the $16,500 feature pace, while Smokin Not Chokin was victorious in the top trot on Thursday, March 6 at Dover Downs. Tim Tetrick and Tony Morgan both partnered three winners.

Frank Milby used the passing lane to shoot Dees Last Man past race favorite Coletown (Corey Callahan) in the final steps for a 1:54.1 victory in the $16,500 4&5-Year-Old Male pace feature. Cathedral Grove (Corey Callahan) was third. It was the second win for breeder-owner-trainer Brian Callahan, who owns the Masterman gelding with Gloria Kinnamon.

Buffalo Have Wings, owned by Colleen and Wilma Chambers, overlooked at 7-2 starting from the rail after a win last week, won his second straight taking the $16,5000 Male pace in 1:53.4, one Ross Wolfenden’s three winning drives. Pros Best Dream (Jonathan Roberts) and Tufsun Beach (Mike Cole) followed in second and third respectively.

Owner-trainer Nick Callahan’s Smokin Not Chokin handled by Corey Callahan opened up turning for home and sped to a 1:56.3 lifetime record winning the $14,500 feature trot. Honolulu Hunk (Tony Morgan) and Smokey Bear (Eddie Davis Jr.) were second and third respectively.

Post 1 proved advantageous for Martha Richardson’s Chianaglia and drover Jim Morand on the way to a 1:53 decision in an $11,500 Male pace. Deliver-The-Bags (Jim King) enjoyed a 2-hole trip and finished second n front of Western Number (Roger Plante).

Greg Simendinger’s Mimi’s Tyler tuned up for the upcoming DSBF events by scoring a come-from-behind 1:54 triumph in a $10,200 4&5-Year-Old Delaware Male pace, Ross Wolfenden’s first win of the night. Frog Juice (Kevin Sizer) was next. Capture The Dream (Jonathan Roberts) came in third.

In the first of two $20,000 claimers, Larry Baron’s Pirate Image closed with a rush for Tim Tetrick to post a 1:53.3 victory. No Fuel Required (Mike Cole) was runner-up. Rare Bunny (Brandon Givens) was the show horse.

Longshots emerged in the two $15,000 Claiming paces. Roger Plante drove 30-1 Ruff Door to a 1:55.2 in one division. Gary Wolfe owns the seven-year-old that won for the first time since 2006. In the other section, Nick Alessandro’s Tossofthecoin and Ross Wolfenden notched a 12-1 victory in 1:55.

Tony Morgan and Art Brewer’s Bo Knows Trouble came out of the pace for a 1:52.3 win in a blanket finish to win a $20,000 Claiming pace. Backdraft Hall (Roger Plante) led until deep stretch and held on for second. Amazing Toy (Jonathan Roberts) picked up third money.

Art’s Pretty Lady wants four in a row at Rosecroft

FT. WASHINGTON, MD – Art’s Pretty Lady is stepping up in class to the $6,000 Open distaff pace at Rosecroft Raceway this Friday, March 7th after winning three consecutive miles in an impressive fashion.

Set to be driven by Frank Milby from the rail position as the 2/1 morning line choice, the trainee of Connie Kamit has shown increasing speed her last few starts. On February 29th, the mare won by over six lengths in 1:54.3 with a last quarter of 27.4. Susan Chytla and Nicholas Kamit Jr. co-own the five-year-old daughter of Arturo.

Gen-U-Wine Raider is sharp as well at 5/2 early odds for owners Julie and Lois Swann, winning her last two miles in upper-level conditioned classes. Trained by Thomas Swann, the seven-year-old Keystone Raider mare quarter-poled for the lead last time out to win by half of a length in 1:55.2 as the even-money choice. Gen-U-Wine Raider will have Kelly Staten at her lines this week, as regular reinsman Frank Milby will be driving the early favorite in the race.

At 4/1 odds from post position five, High Speed Racer went wire-to-wire her last start in 1:54.3 for trainer Roger Hans. The four-year-old Nuclear High mare, racing for owner Tom Cooke, will have Wayne Long in the bike.

Rounding out the field are Wishwell Buttercup (Timmy Offutt, 8/1), You Diehl (Donnie Russell (6/1) and Gorgeous Lover (Victor Kirby, 5/1).

Tetrick wins five at Dover

DOVER, DE — Tim Tetrick began a four-race win streak driving Litigator to a 1:55.1 victory in the $25,000 Winners-Over trot on Wednesday, March 5 at Dover Downs. Tetrick completed a sweep of the top three races, guiding Jessie Hall and Instant Photo to wins in a five-win night.

In the $25,000 feature, Tetrick took Parent Racing and Crystal Ball stables’ Litigator right to the top and never was headed in a 1:55.1 victory, the third of the year for the Valley Victor gelding. Safari Heat finished second for Roger Plante with Eddie Davis Jr. steering Go Nano Go third.

One race later, Howard Kaufman’s Jessie Hall won for the second time in her last two trips as Tetrick directed a 1:56.1 triumph in a $22,000 Mares Winners-Over trot. Financial Glider came on strongly to finish second for Eddie Davis Jr. Star Swagger (Roger Plante) was the third finisher.

Tetrick teamed with Trillium Racing Stable’s Instant Photo for a 1:55.3 score, the first win of the year for the SJ’s Photo gelding. Customize came on for Sam Belote for place money. Laser Lavec and Jonathan Roberts were third.

The $16,500 conditioned trot went to Winbak Red, owned by M&M Harness Racing and Pat Lachance, with Jim King reining the Muscles Yankee gelding to a lifetime record 1:55.3 performance. Brite Speed N (Brandon Givens) was next. Armbro Emma (Ben Stafford) was the third-place finisher.

On the pacing side, Star Drifter N was a strong 1:52.4 winner of a $30,000 Claiming pace. Owned by David Clark and trainer Trevor Stafford, the New Zealand bred Dream Away gelding withstood a late rally from Kilkerran Scot (Tim Tetrick) and Steam The Windows (Roger Plante).

Tim Tetrick drove Mako Sica to a 1:52.4 victory in a $25,000 Claiming Allowance. Rich Lester and trainer Tony Domino own the Badlands Hanover gelding now a three-time winner in 2008. Art’s Sake (Jonathan Roberts) was runner-up. Fully Exotic (Brandon Givens) was the show horse.

Mike Cole pinch hit for leading driver Tony Morgan, away due to illness in the family, and drove Tina Clark’s Who’s Next to a 1:54 success in a $15,500 Delaware 4&5-Year-Old Male pace. Mesquite Heat (Roger Plante) and Shady Mountain GA (Tim Tetrick) were second and third respectively.

In addition to Tim Tetrick’s five wins, Wayne Long and Mike Cole had two driving wins. Meanwhile Rich Ringler haltered two trainee winners.

Immortal Quest victorious at Dover Downs

DOVER, DE — immortal Quest N posted a 1:50 win in the $40,000 Preferred/Open pace, while four-year-olds Mr. Apples and Glass Pack took the Delaware Special and Open paces respectively on a big Monday (March 3) program at Dover Downs.

For the second straight week and fourth time in his last five races, Carter Racing Stable and trainer Bobby Myers’ Immortal Quest N won the top race of the week. Eddie Davis Jr. left and raced into the lead at the quarter, never looking back in a powerful 1:50 demonstration. Fox Valley Armor came on for Yannick Gingras to take second in front of Natural Talent and Tony Morgan. Immortal Quest N is an altered son of Sands A Flyin and now has banked $89,470 in 2008 with four wins and a second in eight starts.

Jim Morand and Teague Inc.’s Mr. Apples proved the best in the $37,500 Delaware Special Handicap. The only four-year-old in the event, the son of Bettor’s Delight won for the third time this season with two seconds and a third. Klondike Kid put in a strong effort racing outside for more than a mile with Eric Goodell to finish second best. Black Cat Bone came on for Ron Pierce to finish third.

Glass Pack left quickly for Tim Tetrick and never was contested in a 1:51 triumph in the $28,000 Jr. Open pace for owners Louis Schaefer and Peter Heffering. PH Top Dog (Yannick Gingras) finished second in front of Eagle Real One (Eric Goodell), who finished third.

Driven To Win was urged by David Miller in a mad dash in the open stretch to overtake Anglebrook (Eric Goodell) in the final steps for a 1:51.2 victory in a $25,000 Winners-Over pace. Owned by Martha, Milton Frank, Ted Gewertz and trainer Joe Holloway, the win was the third of the year for the Jenna’s Beach Boy seven-year-old. Skeleton Key (Yannick Gingras) was third.

The sport’s leading driver Tony Morgan drove 24-1 Ima Prince Too to a 1:51.1 score in a $21,000 Male pace. Sam Jacobs, Elrita Annett and Charles Burris own the Cambest gelding now a three-time winner this year. Uncle Bingo, driven by Ron Pierce, was second. Third-place belonged to Cool Cal and Sean Bier.

Foulk Stables’ Auto Pilot piloted by Tim Tetrick racked up a 1:51 lifetime best clocking winning the $40,000-$50,000 Claiming Handicap. Art’s Son finished second for Ron Pierce. Saucy Master N and David Miller took third.

Tony Morgan came back to the winner’s circle after guiding Bill Emmons’ JK Jack to a 1:51.4 career fastest victory in a $30,000 Claiming Allowance. JK Bettor Be Good (David Miller) was runner-up. Raider’s Legend (Tim Tetrick) was the show finisher.

Tim Tetrick won three races on the card. Tony Morgan, Jim Morand, and Corey Callahan had driving doubles.

Another big win for Winbak sire Badlands Hanover

Tug River Princess, a daughter of Delaware stallion Badlands Hanover, won her eighth in a row in an unbeaten early career on Leap Year day, Feb. 29, at the Meadowlands when John Campbell drove the prohibited favorite at 1-5 odds to a pull-away 1:52.4 victory in the $62,200 Tender Loving Care Final.

Tug River Princess is undefeated, three-for-three, this season. Ross Croghan trains the daughter of Badlands Hanover now owned by Let It Ride Stables and Robert Cooper Stables. They purchased Tug River Princess from her breeder Michael Tait of Dagboro, Del. in a private transaction only two weeks before (on Feb. 15).

Badlands Hanover has been the leading pacing stallion in Delaware as well as prominent on the Grand Circuits starting with his first crop.

In 2007, Badlands Hanover sired seven of the eight Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund $100,000 final winners. His two-year-olds last season earned nearly $1-million while Badlands Hanover three-year-olds had earnings of $1.3-million. In all Badlands Hanover progeny earned $5.4-million in 2007.

On the North America front, Badlands Hanover not only is the leading stallion in Delaware, the son of Western Hanover -Behave Hanover by Tyler B, ranks in the top 20 stallions roster on the continent.

Badlands Hanover starters averaged $23,124 in 2007.

SA Monterosa wires Rosecroft featured field; Milby wins four

FT. WASHINGTON, MD – As the top betting choice in the race, SA Monterosa [$5.60, $2.60, $2.60] paced from gate to wire in a featured Winner’s Over event at Rosecroft Raceway on Saturday for a purse of $4,200.

Driven by Corey Braden from post position three, the seven-year-old gelded son of The Panderosa cut quarters of 28.3, 58.2 and 1:26.0 to win by half of a length in 1:54.4. Thomas Swann trains the gelding for owner Lois Swann.

Racing through a first-over trip, Yokozuna Bo [$2.40, $2.60] finished second with a sharp last quarter of 28.3 Frank Milby drove the four-year-old Allies Western horse for trainer Betsy Brown and owner Ralph Hayward.

Gold Comet [$2.80] and driver Ken Weckstein closed out the $49.20 trifecta with a trip up the lane. The four-year-old Aces N’ Sevens gelding, trained by Ken Schlotzhauer for owners Weckstein and Richard Rubin, held his ground throughout the mile.

MILBY WINS FOUR ON SATURDAY

Reinsman Frank Milby scored four victories on Saturday evening’s 11-race card.

His first win came in the third race with Real Sexy, an eight-year-old Real Artist horse trained by Alvin Callahan and owned by Marvin Callahan. The pacer won by over six lengths in 1:57.3 after sitting in the pocket through the mile.

Milby scored the natural hat trick in races six, seven and eight; the sixth race brought Family Fortune to the winner’s circle after a wire-to-wire trip. The six-year-old Glowing Tribute gelding, owned and trained by Roger Hans, paced to the top in 1:58.0.

Peyote was sharp in the seventh race, pacing to a two-and-three-quarter length win in 1:55.4. Gerald Kelly trains the seven-year-old Cambest horse for lessee Roger Hammer.

In the eighth race, Man He Can Go paced gate to wire in 1:56.2, winning by three lengths. Brian Callahan trains and co-owns the five-year-old Masterman gelding with Gloria Kinnamon.
