“Outlaw” motors three-wide to win at Rosecroft

FT. WASHINGTON, MD – PH Outlaw [$9.00, $2.60, $2.60] turned in an impressive performance in the $4,200 Winner’s Over pace at Rosecroft Raceway on Saturday, traveling three-wide to win by half of a length in 1:54.4.

Driven by Corey Braden, the eight-year-old Happy Family gelding was several lengths off of the leader in sixth through opening fractions of 27.2 and 55.3. Braden took the gelding out second-over behind betting choice Mattjestic Art around the three-quarter pole in 1:24.4. PH Outlaw stuck his neck out at the wire to win for owner William Emmons and trainer Shawn Armour.

Instigator [$3.20, $3.60], driven by Chris Offutt at 12/1 odds by post time, finished second in a dead heat with Mattjestic Art. The eight-year-old Presidential Ball gelding was third up on the outside, and closed with a final quarter of 29.4. ‘Bib’ Roberts trains the gelding for the Graham Grace Stables LLC.

Mattjestic Art [$2.10, $2.10], a trainee of Alvin Callahan, battled to the wire to secure a spot on the board. The seven-year-old Artiscape gelding, owned by Marvin Callahan, was sharp with Milby in the sulky.

Grand Duke Hanover finished third after cutting the opening fractions of the mile with trainer Alvin Callahan in the sulky. The trifecta returned $94.40 for the 7-2-5 combination and $44.20 for 7-5-2.

The morning line favorite, Weiss Hanover, was scratched sick before the race.

Live harness racing returns to the Maryland oval next Friday, April 4th, at 6:30 p.m.
