Pedro’s Pulpit — Drivers: Love ‘em or hate ‘em

By Pete Medhurst, Track Announcer at Rosecroft Raceway

It’s only February, but there are some eye-catching stats so far in this 2008 harness racing season.

Brian Sears is trying to destroy the Meadowlands. He has a 64-37 lead over George Brennan in the driver standings. That leads us to Brennan. The 40-year-old is off to a great start and is not only winning now on the lead, we’re seeing some more well judged trips and that will keep Brennan in
high demand come stakes time.

Did you know Eric Goodell has more Big M wins than John Campbell this season, 15-12? He does have 47 more drives than the Hall of Famer.

Twenty-two different drivers have won races at the Meadowlands in 2008, including Bob Colasanti and John Plutino. Someone find Joe Schwind.

At Dover, its still Tony Morgan setting the pace, but one of the young guns of the sport is setting off one what could be his best year by far. Corey Callahan is the top fifteen in dash wins and earnings, already over
$600,000. We talk about the Dominican Republic turning out a lot of baseball players, how about Cordova, Maryland turning out horsemen talent. Callahan, Frank Milby, and trainer Brian Callahan all hail from the small Talbot County town.

Did you know Callahan and Mid-Atlantic driver Victor Kirby are both college graduates? If Kirby asks you to play H-O-R-S-E for money, tell him no. He was an outstanding point guard at Marymount University.

Stat of the year so far: Dave Palone batting .500!!!!! Now with slots, Palone might actually get rich. Palone is a classy guy and the king of my all-interview team. Palone, John Campbell, Kirby, Callahan, and Jonathan Roberts. Best trainer interview: Jeff Long.
